This free online tool removes the background of images automatically with AI. Upload a photo of a person, a pet, a product or any object, and the tool cuts out the subject and makes the background transparent. You can then keep it transparent, replace it with a solid color or blur it, and download the result as a PNG image.
For logos, icons, signatures and product shots on a plain background, the "Solid color" method removes one color, such as a white or green background, without any AI.
Everything runs directly in your browser. Your image is never uploaded to a server: the AI model is downloaded to your browser once, and the image is processed on your own computer.
| Field | Description | ||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Method | How the subject is separated from the background.
| ||||||||
| Color, tolerance and smoothness | Only for the "Solid color" method. The color to remove is detected from the borders of the image, and you can click on the image to pick another one. Colors closer to it than the tolerance become transparent, and colors a bit further (up to the tolerance plus the smoothness) become semi-transparent, which keeps anti-aliased edges smooth. | ||||||||
| Only the background touching the borders | Only for the "Solid color" method. Removes only the areas of the color that are connected to the borders of the image, so the same color inside the subject is kept, such as the white of the eyes or the inside of letters. Turn it off to remove the color everywhere. | ||||||||
| Hardness | At 0%, the edges are kept as the model created them, with semi-transparent hair and blurred outlines. The AI models work on a reduced copy of the image (1024 x 1024 pixels or less), so on large photos their edges are a bit soft: higher values make them sharper, and also remove the semi-transparent areas where the model is unsure about a part of the background. | ||||||||
| Shift edge | Moves the edge of the subject, in pixels. Negative values shrink the subject and remove thin leftovers of the background around it; positive values grow it. | ||||||||
| Feather | Blurs the edge of the subject, in pixels, for a softer transition to the new background. | ||||||||
| Remove color fringes | The semi-transparent pixels of the edges still contain some of the color of the old background, which looks like a halo over a new background. This option estimates the color of the old background around each edge and removes it from those pixels. | ||||||||
| Show mask | Shows the mask of the subject in black and white: white is kept, black is removed and gray is semi-transparent. Useful to check the edges. | ||||||||
| Background | "Transparent" keeps the background transparent, "Color" fills it with a solid color, and "Blurred" keeps the original background but blurs it, like the portrait mode of phones. | ||||||||
| Crop to subject | Cuts away the empty space around the subject. The margin adds space around it, in pixels. |
The AI methods use image segmentation models, neural networks trained on thousands of photos where the subject was cut out by hand. The image is reduced to the size the model expects, and the model returns a mask: a gray image where white is the subject and black is the background, with grays on soft edges such as hair. The mask is then enlarged to the size of your image, and used as the transparency of the result.
The models run with ONNX Runtime Web, on your graphics card through WebGPU when the browser supports it, and on the processor otherwise. The "AI: any subject" method uses IS-Net (Apache 2.0 license) and "AI: people" uses MODNet (Apache 2.0 license).
Yes, it is 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of images or on their resolution (very large images are reduced to about 16 megapixels).
Are my images uploaded to a server?No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser, and your image is processed on your own computer. It never leaves your device.
Why does the first image take longer?The first time, the browser downloads the AI model (about 88 MB for "AI: any subject" and 26 MB for "AI: people"). The model is kept by the browser, so the next images, and your next visits, start right away.
Why does it take several seconds on my computer?The AI is fastest with WebGPU, a technology that lets web pages use the graphics card. It is supported by recent versions of Chrome and Edge, and by newer versions of Safari and Firefox. On other browsers the model runs on the processor, which takes about 10 seconds per image for "AI: any subject" and 1 or 2 seconds for "AI: people".
Part of the background was not removed. What can I do?Try the other AI method, increase the hardness to remove semi-transparent leftovers, or use a negative "Shift edge" to trim a thin border of background around the subject. Photos where the subject has a clear outline and contrasts with the background give the best results.
How do I remove a white background from a logo?Choose "Solid color". The white is detected automatically; increase the tolerance if some light gray remains, and keep "Only the background touching the borders" on to keep the white parts inside the logo.
Can I change the background to another color?Yes. In "Background", choose "Color" and pick the new color, for example white for product photos or a solid color for profile pictures. You can also blur the original background instead.
In which format is the image saved?As a PNG, which keeps the transparency. To put the subject over another photo, you can use the Overlay images tool.
