Bulk Background Remover

Remove the background of many photos at once, and download them all in a ZIP file.

This free online tool removes the background of many images at once, automatically, with AI. Drop a whole folder of product photos, portraits or pictures of pets, choose the options once, and every image is cut out with the same settings. Keep the backgrounds transparent, replace them with a solid color or blur them, and download all the images in a single ZIP file, or one at a time.

For logos, icons and product shots on a plain background, the "Solid color" method removes a white or green background from every image without any AI.

Everything runs directly in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server: the AI model is downloaded to your browser once, and the images are processed on your own computer.

How to remove the background of many images at once?

  1. Upload your images - Drop as many JPG, PNG or WebP images as you want in the box above, or paste them one by one with Ctrl+V.
  2. Choose the method - "AI: any subject" works with almost any photo; "AI: people" is a smaller model for portraits; "Solid color" removes a plain background color from logos and graphics.
  3. Click "Remove backgrounds" - The first time, the AI model is downloaded to your browser, which can take a minute. Then the images are processed one after the other, and each one shows its result as soon as it is ready.
  4. Check the preview - Click on any image of the list to see it large. If needed, adjust the edges, the new background or the crop: the options apply to all the images, and they are processed again automatically.
  5. Choose the file format - PNG or WebP to keep the transparency, or JPG for smaller files with a solid background.
  6. Download the images - Click "Download all (ZIP)" to save every image in a single ZIP file, or the download button of an image to save only that one.

Options

FieldDescription
Method How the subject is separated from the background, in every image.
MethodDescription
AI: any subjectUses IS-Net, an AI model trained to find the main subject of a photo: people, animals, cars, products, plants, furniture and more. The model is about 88 MB. With WebGPU (recent versions of Chrome and Edge, for example) each image takes a fraction of a second; on other browsers the model runs on the processor, in about 10 seconds per image.
AI: peopleUses MODNet, a smaller AI model (about 26 MB) trained on portraits, which takes 1 or 2 seconds per image. It is made for photos of people and does not work well on objects.
Solid colorRemoves one color and the colors close to it. Best for logos, icons, scanned signatures, screenshots and product photos on a white or green background. No AI and nothing to download.
Detect the color of each imageOnly for the "Solid color" method. When it is on, the color to remove is detected separately in each image, from the most common color on its borders, so images with different background colors can be processed together. Turn it off, or click on the preview, to remove the same color from all the images.
Tolerance and smoothnessOnly for the "Solid color" method. Colors closer to the color to remove than the tolerance become transparent, and colors a bit further (up to the tolerance plus the smoothness) become semi-transparent, which keeps anti-aliased edges smooth.
Only the background touching the bordersOnly for the "Solid color" method. Removes only the areas of the color that are connected to the borders of the image, so the same color inside the subject is kept, such as the white of the eyes or the inside of letters.
HardnessAt 0%, the edges are kept as the model created them, with semi-transparent hair and blurred outlines. Higher values make them sharper, and also remove the semi-transparent areas where the model is unsure about a part of the background.
Shift edgeMoves the edge of the subject, in pixels. Negative values shrink the subject and remove thin leftovers of the background around it; positive values grow it.
FeatherBlurs the edge of the subject, in pixels, for a softer transition to the new background.
Remove color fringesThe semi-transparent pixels of the edges still contain some of the color of the old background, which looks like a halo over a new background. This option estimates the color of the old background around each edge and removes it from those pixels.
Show mask in the previewShows the mask of the image of the preview in black and white: white is kept, black is removed and gray is semi-transparent. It does not change the downloaded images.
Background"Transparent" keeps the background transparent, "Color" fills it with a solid color (white for online stores, for example), and "Blurred" keeps the original background but blurs it, like the portrait mode of phones.
Crop to subjectCuts away the empty space around the subject of each image. The margin adds space around it, in pixels.
File formatPNG keeps the transparency without any loss of quality. WebP also keeps the transparency, in smaller files. JPG gives small files that open everywhere, but has no transparency: a transparent background becomes white. The quality only applies to WebP and JPG.

How does the bulk background remover work?

The AI methods use image segmentation models, neural networks trained on thousands of photos where the subject was cut out by hand. Each image is reduced to the size the model expects, and the model returns a mask: a gray image where white is the subject and black is the background. The mask is enlarged to the size of the image and used as its transparency. The images are processed one after the other, and the mask of each image is kept, so changing an option only redoes the quick steps after the AI.

The models run with ONNX Runtime Web, on your graphics card through WebGPU when the browser supports it, and on the processor otherwise. The "AI: any subject" method uses IS-Net (Apache 2.0 license) and "AI: people" uses MODNet (Apache 2.0 license). The ZIP file is also created in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this bulk background remover free?

Yes, it is 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of images (very large images are reduced to about 16 megapixels).

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser, and your images are processed on your own computer. They never leave your device.

How many images can I process at once?

There is no fixed limit. The results are kept in the memory of your browser until you download them, so hundreds of photos work on most computers; with thousands of large photos, it is better to process them in groups of a few hundred.

How long does it take?

With WebGPU (recent versions of Chrome and Edge, and newer versions of Safari and Firefox), "AI: any subject" takes a fraction of a second per image, so 100 photos take about a minute. Without WebGPU, the model runs on the processor and takes about 10 seconds per image; "AI: people" takes 1 or 2 seconds per image. The first time, the AI model also has to be downloaded.

Can I use different settings for some of the images?

The options apply to all the images of the list. To use other settings for a few images, download the ZIP, remove the images from the list, then add the others again with the new settings, or edit a single image with the Background remover.

Some images were not cut out well. What can I do?

Try the other AI method, increase the hardness to remove semi-transparent leftovers, or use a negative "Shift edge" to trim a thin border of background around the subject. Photos where the subject has a clear outline and contrasts with the background give the best results.

How do I put all the products on a white background?

Choose "Color" in "Background" and keep the white color, turn on "Crop to subject" with a margin to center each product, and choose JPG to get small files that every online store accepts.

Why can't some images be read?

The images are opened by your browser, so they must be in a format it supports, such as JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF. HEIC photos from iPhones only open in Safari: in other browsers, convert them to JPG first.
