Why is the PNG file bigger than the WebP file?That is expected. The WebP file was compressed by throwing away information, while PNG stores every pixel exactly, so it needs more bytes to describe the same image. A PNG two or three times the size of the original .webp is perfectly normal, and for photos the difference can be much larger.
Does converting to PNG improve the quality of the image?No. PNG is lossless, but it can only be lossless about the pixels it receives. If the WebP file was saved with a low quality, the compression artifacts are already baked into the image and the PNG will preserve them faithfully. Converting to PNG protects the image from further quality loss, it does not undo the loss that already happened.
Does the PNG keep the transparent background of the WebP image?Yes. Both formats have an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are copied across unchanged.
Why does my computer not open .webp files?WebP is newer than PNG and JPEG, so support arrived late in desktop software. Recent versions of Windows, macOS, Photoshop and GIMP do open .webp files, but older releases and many upload forms still do not. Converting to PNG avoids the problem entirely.
